EVERY encounter becomes an unexpected story, and so it was with the meeting between Hyerda Abdul Talib and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

What began as a friendship grew into a deep bond of sisterhood –– one that continues to blossom without fading to this day.

Recalling the beautiful memories shared with Toh Puan Fauziah, Hyerda begins her story with the first time she laid eyes on the poised woman that is Toh Puan Fauziah, towards the end of 2015.

“Our first meeting took place at the home of Toh Puan Fauziah’s mother. At that time, she had come to pick up her son, Tasnim, who happened to be staying there.

“In that moment, my first impression was that she seemed fierce. However, all those initial assumptions quickly vanished the moment she began to speak.

“Her voice was soft yet firm, and every word she uttered was well-structured, meaningful and delivered with a unique rhythm.

“There was something in her way of speaking –– perhaps influenced by her experience as a flight attendant, where one naturally develops a calm and soothing intonation, familiar to ears on board a plane.

“Oh, and one more thing I’ll never forget –– she always smells lovely. She has a distinctive fragrance that, to this day, reminds me of her,” said Hyerda, fondly reminiscing that first encounter.

A shared passion for travel became the thread that tied their bond even closer.

Toh Puan Fauziah, through her career as a Malaysia Airlines flight attendant, gave Hyerda golden opportunities to accompany her on trips and to travel while she was on duty. Hyerda shared that whenever Toh Puan Fauziah was assigned to a destination she herself had always wanted to visit, Toh Puan Fauziah would invite her along –– even if the layover was less than 24 hours.

“Whenever Toh Puan Fauziah had assignments in countries I wished to see, even if we had less than 24 hours during a layover, we made the most of our time to explore the city.

“Each time I accompanied her on duty, she made sure I arrived safely at the destination.

“Toh Puan Fauziah would fill in my arrival card and prepare step-by-step guidance for getting to the crew’s accommodation.

“Even though she wasn’t physically with me during the journey, it felt as if she was walking right beside me, thanks to the meticulous guidance she provided.

“And if she had any spare time, she would invite me to join her during standby hours at Kuala Lumpur International Airport –– perhaps for tea or dinner at one of her favourite hotels,” said Hyerda.

In addition to travelling together, Toh Puan Fauziah never failed to send messages via WhatsApp or call to share updates about the countries she was assigned to.

“Even when I wasn’t accompanying her, she always kept in touch –– sharing where she was flying to while we exchanged messages or spoke on the phone. From that point onwards, our relationship deepened and we grew close –– like sisters who understood each other without needing many words,” she said.

UNFORGETTABLE FUNNY MOMENTS

Every step in their friendship carried beautiful memories that remain etched in Hyerda’s heart. One such memory was a shared travel experience abroad.

“One of the things we always did abroad was have coffee together. Toh Puan Fauziah would joke, saying, ‘Hyerda, let’s have coffee in my kampung,’ referring to London, which she called her hometown because of how often she was assigned to fly there.

“Apart from her usual jokes, I remember this one time in Seoul. We were on a bus heading into the city. While queuing to pay for the fare, Toh Puan Fauziah searched through her handbag for coins –– while all the other passengers were using Touch ‘n Go cards. Her action delayed the bus slightly.

“I could only smile watching her. It showed how unbothered she was by luxury or convenience. Even in the simplest of situations, she remained calm and humorous,” said Hyerda.

THE HEART BEHIND THE ROLE

Behind the warm smile that always adorned Toh Puan Fauziah’s face lies a side that few truly know. Having known her for a decade, Hyerda sees Toh Puan Fauziah as someone with unmatched firmness and compassion.

“Despite the firmness she carries, Toh Puan Fauziah is actually very approachable. Anyone who meets her for the first time feels as though they’ve known her for years.

“Toh Puan Fauziah isn’t someone who’s constantly serious. She often cracks jokes during conversations. Yet, she is mindful of her words and always strives to speak with utmost politeness. She’s easy to talk to on a wide range of topics as long as it doesn’t go beyond her area of knowledge or comfort.

“More than that, she is a caring individual who looks after the people around her. Whether it’s birthdays, festive occasions, or even ordinary days –– she never fails to send gifts. She loves sharing her blessings with those she loves,” she said.

THE HIDDEN SIDE OF TOH PUAN FAUZIAH

Behind her sweet smile and graceful personality, Toh Puan Fauziah holds secrets that few are aware of.

One of them, Hyerda revealed, is her skill in martial arts — she is a highly talented silat practitioner.

“Never challenge her — she’s exceptionally good at silat. In addition to her self-defence skills, she’s also highly gifted in the art of decoration.

“She loves flower arranging, home decorating and adding her personal touch to every space she creates.

“Besides that, Toh Puan Fauziah also enjoys entrepreneurship.

“She’s sold Amway products, headscarves and perfumes before.

“Despite her busy schedule, she always found time for business –– not for profit, but for the fulfilment that came with each interaction.

“She’s also very active –– dancing is her way of staying fit, and netball, her favourite sport, is something she truly enjoys,” Hyerda added with admiration.

WORDS TO LIVE BY

Above all, the most valuable gift from Toh Puan Fauziah is her advice –– guidance that continues to shape Hyerda’s life to this day.

One of the most meaningful pieces of wisdom she ever gave was: ‘Don’t bother with what people say if it doesn’t bring value to your life.’

“Whenever I face challenges, I remember those words –– and they give me the strength to keep going.

“Toh Puan Fauziah also taught me not to burden others with our problems and most importantly, to believe in myself.

“These words have become my compass in life –– and I hold them dear, now and always,” said Hyerda.

FROM NETBALL COURTS TO LASTING SISTERHOOD

FOR Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) Emergency Management Senior Executive, Serina Hor, her friendship with Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi is one of those rare and precious connections that grew from a shared passion for netball and blossomed into a sisterhood built on trust and admiration.

As she reminisces their journey together, Serina paints a picture of a woman whose generosity, warmth and strength have touched many lives.

More than just a friend, Toh Puan Fauziah is a guiding light, a source of inspiration and a heart that overflows with kindness.

Serina, 60, from Selangor, dedicated over four decades of her life to Malaysia Airlines, a career filled with countless memories. One of the most treasured moments was crossing paths with Toh Puan Fauziah.

THE BEGINNING OF A CHERISHED FRIENDSHIP

Their friendship began in 2015 through the MAS Sports Club, where Serina served on the committee and Toh Puan Fauziah was the airline’s netball team president.

In recalling their meetings, Serina said her first encounter with Toh Puan Fauziah was when she attended the netball team training, monitoring their performance and the players’ attendance.

“My first impression of her was that she was warm and friendly. She introduced me to the team, consisting mostly of cabin crew members.

“When it came to training, she was serious about it and made sure the team gave their best,” she said.

And just as she was dedicated to the sport, Toh Puan Fauziah carried that spirit into her professional life.

“Likewise, when she was in her crew uniform, she would put her best forward and was always ready with a warm smile to serve passengers,” she said.

Serina believes friendship is about consistency and presence, even when life gets busy.

Though their busy careers often kept them on different schedules, Serina and Toh Puan Fauziah always found time to nurture their friendship.

“She was always flying, so we hardly met. However, we made sure to check in with each other.

“It was through a little chat on the phone or meeting at the airport for a drink or chit-chat when she returned from duty,” she said.

Their bond extended beyond netball tournaments and work.

“We travelled together for netball tournaments and would take care of one another.

“We lived very near each other. What has been keeping our friendship strong until today is that we are not just friends. We are like sisters. I miss her so much,” she said.

A HEART OF GOLD

If there is one story that truly encapsulates the essence of Toh Puan Fauziah’s character, it is her generosity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Serina remembered a friend who was facing a difficult financial situation.

“My friend had lost his job and had two school-going children. He came to me for help, but I was facing financial difficulties.

“Toh Puan Fauziah noticed something was bothering me, and when I told her, she didn’t hesitate. She immediately said, ‘Let’s team up and help your friend,” she said.

What touched Serina the most was that Toh Puan Fauziah did not know who the person was and insisted on remaining anonymous.

“She said, ‘Don’t tell your friend who is helping her. Just say, ‘Hamba Allah’ (a servant of God),” she said.

Serina remembered that in addition to helping her friend, Toh Puan Fauziah went above and beyond for her netball team.

“She helped the MAS netball team by raising funds for additional attire. She raised funds to buy a pair of sports shoes and T-shirts for the players. I still have the T-shirt with me.

“That showed how true and humble she was –– helping someone that she did not know. She has a heart of gold, full of love for others,” she said.

A BEAUTIFUL SOUL

If Serina had to describe Toh Puan Fauziah in just a few words, it would be: a beautiful soul.

But words, she insisted, can never truly capture the depth of her friend’s kindness and strength.

“You need to know her to understand what I mean,” she said.

Serina then shared one little quirk that remains endearing to this day –– Toh Puan Fauziah’s habit of ending her sentences with ‘tau’.

“She would say, ‘Serina, makan tau!’ or ‘Kita jumpa esok tau!’,” she said, adding that Toh Puan Fauziah used it even when talking to her son.

“It’s something uniquely hers and I wonder if she still does it,” she added.

Beyond that, Serina said she truly admired Toh Puan Fauziah’s leadership, resilience and dedication. They left a lasting impact on everyone around her.

“Toh Puan Fauziah is also forgiving, helpful, believes in teamwork, is determined and always finds it hard to say no to her friends.

“She showed that nothing is impossible if we try hard and work together,” she said.

Whether on the netball court or in the skies, Toh Puan Fauziah radiated positivity and strength.

Serina said everyone has hurdles in life, but for Toh Puan Fauziah, nothing was impossible.

“She had some challenges, but she faced them positively and took them a step at a time. She never mixed family and working life, and managed them well,” she said.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEART

As Toh Puan Fauziah goes through a new chapter with her husband, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Serina has only love and admiration for her dear friend.

For Toh Puan Fauziah, she said: “Gee, I miss you so much. I am happy to see you leading a wonderful life now with Tun.

“I know your days must be busy, but I can see the happiness in both of you. May you and Tun have a blissful and happy life together until Jannah,” with heartfelt sincerity, she closed with a final wish.

“May you and Tun be blessed with the best health always and be loved by all Sarawakians.”

Therefore, for Serina, their friendship is not just a chapter from the past — it is a connection that will remain in her heart forever.

CARVED IN MEMORY, HELD IN LOVE

LIFE often takes us in unexpected directions. For, a flight attendant soaring through the skies, fate led her to cross paths with Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi –– not merely a colleague, but a friend who provided strength in navigating life’s trials.

For her, what began as light conversation blossomed into a deep and meaningful friendship. Even amid the demanding world of aviation, they stood together, supporting one another through the challenges that life presented.

Netball became the thread that bonded them. Qalijah Blue Rohaan and Toh Puan Fauziah began playing together in corporate matches around 2006. In those games, Qalijah played as an attacker, while Toh Puan played a crucial role in defence. Toh Puan Fauziah was exceptionally talented in her defensive position and her prowess on the court left Qalijah in awe.

“Her arms were so long and sometimes I felt they were stretched beyond the net itself. Toh Puan Fauziah moved with speed and agility of an octopus, making it incredibly hard for any opponent to get past her.

“Whenever we faced opposing teams, Toh Puan was always the one to watch –– so much so that rival coaches would issue special instructions just to mark her. Her excellence and influence on the court had a significant impact on the entire game,” she said.

According to Qalijah, Toh Puan Fauziah also held a remarkable high jump record among their group. She once broke her own high jump record, and each of her sporting achievements served as a source of inspiration for Qalijah and their colleagues.

Although Toh Puan Fauziah faced some health issues at that time that slightly limited her physical activity, her unwavering spirit and dedication continued to inspire them all. Toh Puan Fauziah is not only a firm individual but also one who is brave and resilient. Her assertiveness never hindered her from expressing her opinions –– even in front of thousands of watchful eyes. Her honesty and openness in voicing her thoughts made her a respected and admired figure, often becoming a source of inspiration.

“Behind her firm demeanour lies a deeper side –– one that fiercely guards her privacy, always careful with what she shares. It’s this that makes her a mysterious figure, radiating an increasingly captivating aura and leaving a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to know her.

“Toh Puan Fauziah prefers to keep much of her story to herself, choosing not to reveal everything –– making her personality akin to an unsolvable riddle.

“But what is truly remarkable about her is not just her exceptional assertiveness or courage, but the deep empathy she possesses. She leads not only with a strong voice but with a heart full of compassion. Every decision she makes is guided by empathy, always sensitive to the hardships of others. Her hands are always open, ready to welcome those in need with care and kindness,” she said.

Toh Puan Fauziah also taught Qalijah the meaning of patience and perseverance in facing life’s trails. Qalijah shared that Toh Puan Fauziah often advised her to be more patient, especially when managing family matters.

“I’ve learnt a great deal from her about handling life’s problems calmly and wisely. At first glance, she may seem somewhat aloof, but in truth, she is warm and always cheerful. When she’s upset, she is firm –– but never afraid to stand up for her rights,” said Qalijah.

Amid their growing friendship lies a treasure trove of beautiful memories that will forever be etched in Qalijah’s heart. One of the most cherished was their family holiday to Paris, which remains vivid in her memory.

The trip held deep meaning, as it brought together both Qalijah’s and Toh Puan Fauziah’s families, with every moment filled with laughter and joy. According to Qalijah, the holiday wasn’t just about exploring a new destination –– it was about bringing everyone together and creating incomparable memories. Their trips to Langkawi and other destinations also strengthened their bond, turning those moments into lifelong memories that Qalijah will always hold dear.

“What makes Toh Puan Fauziah truly special to me is not just the sweet memories, but her boundless kindness and concern for others. She always puts others first, even when facing difficulties herself. Without a second thought for her own comfort, she keeps giving, keeps helping and never keeps score.

“Her generosity and compassion weren’t felt by me alone, but by so many around her. She is a living example of a person with a big heart –– always loving, present and supportive, expecting nothing in return,” she added.

Among the most valuable pieces of advice Toh Puan Fauziah gave Qalijah was the importance of patience –– but at the same time, to remain firm in the face of life’s challenges.

“Toh Puan Fauziah is incredibly disciplined and patient in every aspect of life. The firmness and resilience she displays in all situations have had a profound impact on me.

“Although she is now occupied with increasing responsibilities, the bond we share remains as strong as ever. We still keep in touch through WhatsApp, checking in on another, though not as frequently as before. Distance may separate us, but the love and friendship we share will never fade,” she said.

A TRIBUTE TO KINDNESS AND STRENGTH

THOSE fortunate enough to have known Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi will always remember her as more than just a colleague. She was a woman of immense kindness, unwavering strength and genuine honesty.

Toh Puan Fauziah lived gracefully, her warmth touching all those she encountered. Noor Hafizah Hairuddin and Ritta Habib, two of her closest friends and former colleagues at Malaysia Airlines, fondly shared their memories of Toh Puan Fauziah.

They admired her and cherished the time they spent with her. Her powerful influence left an indelible mark on their hearts, never to be forgotten.

Noor Hafizah, now 47, first met Toh Puan Fauziah in passing, exchanging polite nods and quick greetings between flights. Then in 2011 or 2012, they formed a strong bond while training to convert to the Airbus A380.

The training required them to stay overnight near Kelana Jaya in Selangor to avoid the hassle of early morning commutes. It was during those long days that their friendship blossomed.

“When you don’t know someone, you make assumptions. But once we talked, I realised we were on the same wavelength. We just clicked instantly,” said Noor Hafizah, who has been working with the airline for 28 years.

Similarly, Ritta — now 53 — a leading stewardess, met Toh Puan Fauziah in 2005 and was immediately struck by her personality.

“My first impression was she was so well put-together, graceful, approachable, and well-groomed. But beyond that, she was friendly and had an outstanding personality,” she reminisced.

As a stewardess, Toh Puan Fauziah was the epitome of professionalism — composed, elegant and always putting others before herself.

Noor Hafizah remembers how Toh Puan Fauziah went above and beyond to ensure her passengers were comfortable. “She never burst out unnecessarily. She handled difficult situations with composure and diplomacy,” she said.

Outside the uniform, she said, Toh Puan Fauziah was just as warm and friendly.

“The best part about our friendship was that we hardly gossiped. We didn’t talk about colleagues –– we talked about everything else. Politics, world affairs, random news we saw on social media,” she said.

For her, it was Toh Puan Fauziah’s leadership skills that truly set her apart. Whether in the aircraft or during sporting events, she was a natural leader who took responsibility seriously.

“One example of her exceptional qualities was her pride, initiative and sense of responsibility in every situation she found herself in, particularly within the netball team.

“Her skills and technique had a good impact on all the players as a good team leader,” she said.

Their jobs took them around the world and in those rare moments when they were rostered together, they made the most of it.

Noor Hafizah recalled one particularly memorable trip to Narita, Japan.

“It was winter, and nobody wanted to go out, but we decided to brave the cold. We wandered through town and enjoyed the moment,” she said.

Another special memory was a London layover when they explored the city together — a rare break from their demanding schedules.

One of Ritta’s most memorable experiences occurred during a layover in London in winter when they became stranded on a train because of a snowstorm.

“We worked together several times on domestic and international flights; for example, to London, Tokyo and Adelaide, Australia.

“I remember one of our most special travels. While in London during winter, we were trapped in a train to Kensal Rise City for a few hours due to a snowstorm.

“It was cold. We were told to return to Paddington train station, and we went shopping at Oxford Street,” she said with a smile.

Even after she left Malaysia Airlines, Toh Puan Fauziah remained a constant presence in the lives of her friends.

The bond between Noor Hafizah and Toh Puan Fauziah went deep due to their shared experiences as flight attendants and mothers.

Their connection was special as their sons were born in the same year.

“We always updated each other on our children — how they were doing in school, their tuition classes, their exams. Even after she left, we still checked in on each other,” she said.

For Ritta, the foundation of their friendship was sincerity, trust, and mutual respect.

“Toh Puan Fauziah was always willing to share her knowledge and experience and gave a helping hand without being asked,” she said.

What made Toh Puan Fauziah stand out among her peers was her unwavering energy and determination.

Noor Hafizah said that Toh Puan Fauziah never complained about being tired.

“She could have a packed day, be involved in sports, and charity work, and still show up the next day as fresh as ever. If it were me, I’d probably take a medical leave,” she said as she laughed.

In addition to her impressive professional achievements and athletic abilities, she was known for her exceptional generosity.

She always went out of her way to assist her friends, whether providing transportation, offering financial support, or simply being a listening ear.

“She would drive from Kuala Lumpur to Sepang just to fetch me for training, even when I told her not to.

“After just two days, she was already determined to send me back.

“Considering Kuala Lumpur’s notorious traffic, this was not a task many would willingly undertake. However, that was just her nature –– selfless and always putting others before herself,” she explained.

Ritta portrayed Toh Puan Fauziah as a resilient woman who could confidently and professionally handle and resolve any issues that might arise.

“I admire her for her elegance, discipline, compassion, serenity, independence and precision,” Ritta said.

She emphasised that punctuality was Toh Puan Fauziah’s utmost priority and she was always responsible in everything she was involved in.

For those who knew her best, Toh Puan Fauziah was and always will be the same person with or without a title. Even after becoming Toh Puan Fauziah, she remains unchanged, Noor Hafizah fondly recalled.

“She’s still the same person. When I call her, I don’t say ‘Toh Puan.’ I still call her ‘dear’, ‘sayang’, or ‘ji’. And she’s fine with it. Maybe in public, I’d have to be more formal. But between us? Nothing has changed,” she said.

Despite being far apart, they spoke on the phone, catching up about their sons’ university life.

“She has always been, and will always be, the same kind-hearted, thoughtful and energetic person.

“I hope she continues to do what she loves — helping people, contributing to charity. I know she will because that’s just who she is,” she said.

For Ritta, what people should know is that beyond the uniform and the title, Toh Puan Fauziah is a woman of empathy, humility and strength.

“Something that people might not know but should know is that Toh Puan Fauziah was a good athlete and sportswoman and had a strong mindset.

“Besides that, Toh Puan Fauziah is very generous, humble, polite and down-to-earth. Empathy for humankind is always with her,” she said.

Friendships like these — formed in the skies, strengthened through shared experiences and enduring through the years — are rare. For Noor Hafizah and Ritta, Toh Puan Fauziah is not just a friend. She is family.

KEEPING HERITAGE ALIVE

TOH Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi often dons keringkam and Sarawak songket when attending official events as a way to introduce the state’s exquisite weaving arts to the world.

However, to truly showcase the proper way of wearing keringkam and songket, guidance from experts skilled in these traditional handcrafted fabric is essential.

Therefore, Malissa Sahari, Head of Corporate and Strategic Communications, Marketing and Gallery Unit at CENTEXS Commercial, is one of the individuals who has guided Toh Puan Fauziah in deepening her understanding of Sarawak’s weaving heritage.

Malissa shared that her first encounter with Toh Puan Fauziah was an extraordinary experience, as she had the honour of assisting and advising the First Lady of Sarawak on matters related to keringkam and songket Sarawak.

“The first time I met Toh Puan Fauziah in person, I felt something truly special. She is such a warm and gracious woman, her smile radiating calm and kindness.

“At that time, I had the honour of presenting several pieces of songket fabric, selayah and keringkam shawls to her.

“Toh Puan Fauziah even asked me to select and match the most suitable combinations of songket and keringkam to be presented as souvenirs from the Astana Negeri Sarawak to a delegation in Kuala Lumpur. That was an immense honour for me,” she shared with heartfelt emotion.

What touched Malissa most was not merely Toh Puan Fauziah’s elegance, but her deep passion for Sarawak’s cultural heritage. Every question she asked reflected a sincere curiosity and appreciation for the art of weaving.

Malissa could sense how profoundly Toh Puan Fauziah valued the beauty and culture interwoven in every thread.

“Toh Puan Fauziah also asked about the best ways to style the keringkam shawl and songket for herself. With every question she asked, I could see her intense focus and each nod from her showed that she received what I shared with an open heart,” said Malissa.

As someone well-versed in the history of Sarawak songket and keringkam weaving, Malissa made sure every detail she shared was accurate, as she did not want any miscommunication to affect Toh Puan Fauziah’s perception of this heritage. Despite her expertise, she admitted feeling slightly nervous.

“Although I was a little anxious, worried that I might explain something incorrectly, Toh Puan Fauziah was always gracious and never hesitated to ask again if anything was unclear. That made me feel more at ease and not pressured.

“The respect was always there, though it was gently wrapped in the warmth of her smile,” Malissa recalled with admiration and reverence.

Another aspect that greatly impressed Malissa was Toh Puan Fauziah’s impeccable fashion sense, which radiates timeless elegance and natural beauty.

Malissa was captivated by her ability to carry every outfit with effortless grace. Whether attending formal functions or casual events, she always exudes sophistication and draws admiration from those around her.

“Toh Puan Fauziah knows exactly how to select and pair each outfit that complements her perfectly. This is especially evident during official events. Her classic baju kurung, often her signature choice, is beautifully enhanced by a keringkam shawl that completes her look.

“The keringkam has now become a symbol — a defining element of Toh Puan Fauziah’s appearance. It is not merely an accessory but an integral part of her identity,” Malissa added with heartfelt admiration.
