FULFILLING ASPIRATIONS, CREATING SUCCESS
EXPLORING the life journey of Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi reveals that success is not merely a matter of privilege. Instead, it is forged through experience, challenges and steadfast dedication. Her story illustrates that genuine achievement stems from perseverance and resilience.
A childhood marked by early maturity and adolescence filled with hardships and sacrifices laid the foundation for the exceptional character of Toh Puan Fauziah that we see today.
From being an outstanding student and athlete, she has now become a prominent figure, playing a significant role in society.
The principles and values instilled since her school days have shaped her steadfast character — one imbued with compassion and determination to contribute to the community, the state and the nation.
Indeed, her path demonstrates that genuine leadership transcends mere titles. It embodies the capacity to motivate, to lead with authenticity and to positively influence the lives of others. Toh Puan Fauziah exemplifies this leadership, both in her past and present.
BETWEEN DREAMS AND SACRIFICES
The vast Kuala Lumpur sky bore silent witness to the dreams Toh Puan Fauziah had nurtured since childhood — lofty aspirations that often clashed with the harsh realities of hardship.
She often envisioned her mother, Mahni Haji Aman, working tirelessly to provide for her and her siblings.
In 1997, Toh Puan Fauziah received an offer to further her studies at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) — a dream she had always cherished. However, she had to make a difficult choice.
“It wasn’t that I didn’t want to or was unwilling. But the realities of our situation compelled me to be more practical in determining my future direction,” she said.
Rather than chasing her ambitions, Toh Puan Fauziah chose to shoulder the responsibility of supporting her family. She could not bear to see her mother struggle, let alone burden her with the high cost of education, especially as her younger siblings were still in school.
While waiting for a more promising opportunity after completing her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams, Toh Puan Fauziah took on various part-time jobs to help support her family and save money to further her studies. She worked at Club Century Paradise, going through her days with the hope that her fate would one day change.
Her perseverance paid off when she got a temporary teaching position at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati where she taught Malay Literature.
Later, she taught at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Pandan Indah, where she was a class teacher responsible for teaching multiple subjects.
The field of education opened a new chapter in Toh Puan Fauziah’s life. She taught with great dedication, embracing every responsibility with sincerity.
Her students became a source of strength, allowing her, if only briefly, to forget her difficulties. Yet, financial constraints remained a major challenge, as her teaching position was not permanent.
Determined to pursue higher education, Toh Puan Fauziah sought other employment. Fortune smiled upon her when she was hired as a receptionist by Maybank Management at Menara Maybank, Jalan Tun Perak. Yet, her heart remained unfulfilled, for she knew that knowledge was the key to changing her circumstances.
Thus, she enrolled at Stamford College, located in Cahaya Suria Building, Kuala Lumpur, to pursue a certification from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in hopes of obtaining the Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) qualification.
She studied with determination, viewing education as her pathway to a better life. However, life often unfolds in unexpected ways. Before Toh Puan Fauziah could complete her studies, the nation’s leading airline, Malaysia Airlines, offered her a position as a flight attendant — an opportunity that would shape the next chapter of her life.
In life, there are dreams we build for ourselves and there are destinies shaped by the love of those who cherish us. That opportunity arrived like the wind, shifting the sails of her journey.
Toh Puan Fauziah stood at a crossroads — whether to continue her studies or embrace opportunity before her. With acceptance in her heart, she chose to step into a new world — a journey not born purely of ambition, but one paved by a mother’s love and aspirations.
Her mother has always been the most influential figure in her life — the woman who sheltered and guided her and imparting life’s wisdom along the way.
As a devoted daughter, she never refused her mother’s requests, even when her heart was not drawn to the aviation industry.
“My original ambition was to become a lawyer, but fate led me to an unexpected destination.
“My mother was the one who encouraged me the most to explore this field. She had her unfulfilled dreams, which she passed on to her children,” she shared.
While growing up in Singapore, Toh Puan Fauziah’s mother often watched her neighbours leave for work as flight attendants.
From then on, the dream of soaring through the skies took root in her heart. Unable to pursue that dream herself, Toh Puan Fauziah’s mother encouraged her children to reach for the skies and travel the world.
“At first, my mother suggested that my brother, Mohd Faizul Azhar Mohd Sanusi, join Malaysia Airlines, but he declined. When the opportunity for an interview arose, my mother, filled with hope, urged me to give it a try.
“She told me it was an exciting career. So, as a daughter who never turned down her requests, I agreed wholeheartedly.
“In honour of my mother’s dream, I attended the interview with sincerity and determination, even though I had no particular interest in aviation, let alone in becoming a flight attendant,” she said.
One serene morning in November 1999, fate took its course. Toh Puan Fauziah attended the interview at the MAS Academy in Kelana Jaya. With her heart full of nerves, she walked into the academy, accompanied by her beloved mother, who had always been her pillar of strength.
The grand academy building stood tall, welcoming hopeful candidates dreaming of an aviation career. The interview hall felt like a battlefield, where every smile, word and movement was scrutinised with great attention. Yet, with a calmness that came from her mother’s blessing, Toh Puan Fauziah passed each stage confidently and advanced to the next round.
She said, “Honestly, I was shocked that I passed all the assessments even though I had never been on an aeroplane before. I succeeded and was accepted.”
The following day, she returned to the academy for the second round of interviews. That day felt even more challenging, but with every step she took, fate once again favoured her. She successfully navigated the tests, surpassing hundreds of other hopeful candidates vying for the same opportunity.
Then, on 17 January, 2000, her real journey began. The MAS cabin crew training course commenced — a rigorous three-month period filled with learning, discipline and personal transformation. Every day at the academy, she trained in aviation safety, service etiquette, emergency response and a wealth of knowledge that made her more than just a flight attendant greeting passengers.
From a young woman who had never imagined herself in the aviation world, Toh Puan Fauziah finally soared into the skies with pride and confidence. Such is the nature of fate — sometimes, it unfolds through the wishes of a loved one. She also realised that being a flight attendant was not just about beauty and smiles; it was a role of great responsibility, ensuring the safety of everyone aboard.
A world she had never dreamed of became an inseparable part of her life. The sky, once unfamiliar, became her companion; the clouds, once distant, became a place where she served. It is because sometimes, the destiny shaped by those who love us turns out to be the greatest gift we never knew we needed.
