BEHIND every success in Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi’s life is one driving force and that is her mother, Mahni Haji Aman. A strong, resilient woman, Mahni played a pivotal role in shaping her daughter’s character and inspiring the values that would guide her throughout life.

Her mother taught her to be steadfast, never to give up and to value herself. These lessons became the foundation of Toh Puan Fauziah’s strength as she faced life’s challenges. From a young age, she witnessed her mother’s tireless determination — a woman who never wavered in the face of hardship.

They lived modestly and she understood early on that life was no fairy tale. Watching her mother work unceasingly as a provider, without a single word of complaint, she learned the true meaning of sacrifice.

“My mother was very resilient and faced life’s challenges head-on. Since I was young, I watched her strive to raise us five siblings. My mother provided for all of us on her own,” she said.

Toh Puan Fauziah sees her mother as her greatest mentor, idol and teacher, who only wish was for her children to grow into independent, self-reliant individuals.

“No one influenced my values and life principles more than my mother. She was determined and her actions always reflected her words. If she made a promise, she would keep it.

“My mother worked hard without ever acknowledging exhaustion and this principle guides my life,” she said.

From an early age, Toh Puan Fauziah learned not to give up easily when faced with difficulty. Her mother taught her depend on her own capabilities rather than seek help from others.

“One should not ask for help or depend on anyone, not even the government because receiving from others comes with a debt of gratitude, which is heavy to carry for a lifetime.

“My mother always advised, ‘Never depend on others. Whatever we earn is our own. If life gets tough, do not blame anyone. Our success or failure rests on our efforts. Do not beg or feel disheartened if people do not give. It’s about how much we strive, not what we received freely’,” she recalled her mother’s words.

Those words became her constant mantra, a shield against hard times and a guiding light in the dark.

Toh Puan Fauziah’s mother raised five children with love, teaching them to face life with integrity and strength.

“I don’t draw inspiration from famous quotes. What stays with me are my mother’s words.

“She always insisted that as long as we were healthy and strong, we should never beg. It’s not right to ask for something without effort; life demands dignity, which must be protected.

“She drilled this into us so deeply that it has become second nature, guiding me to this day,” she shared.

Toh Puan Fauziah learned that financial struggles were not a reason for despair but stepping stones toward success. She once told her husband, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, that if they ever faced financial hardship, she would willingly return to work to support the family.

“When Tun said he wasn’t going to work anymore, I reassured him that I could step in if needed. Although he did not like the idea, I felt strongly about it. This mindset came from my mother,” she explained.

Her mother’s lessons have shaped her from childhood, instilling in her a deep belief in hard work and resilience.

No matter the challenges she faced throughout her career, her spirit remained unbroken — a reflection of her mother’s strength. Toh Puan Fauziah continues to draw inspiration from that legacy of endurance and discipline.

For her, discipline is the cornerstone of success — a value that has guided her through every stage of her life, both personally and professionally.

“Discipline is my greatest secret. It’s been part of me since the beginning — essential to everything I do,” she reflected.

She then recalled a lighthearted comment from Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who once told her, “You are quite, extremely disciplined, aren’t you?”

This acknowledgement fills her with pride, as discipline shapes her character and enables her to face life’s challenges.

To her, success is impossible without discipline. It is not merely about punctuality or following rules, but about self-control, focus and perseverance during adversity.

“Without discipline, achieving in anything is difficult. Managing life with discipline makes everything more organised and achievable,” emphasised.

Her life serves as a testament to the power of a woman firmly rooted in her principles, proving that femininity does not equate to weakness.

Toh Puan Fauziah’s story is an inspiring example of the transformative power of discipline.

Born into a humble family, Toh Puan Fauziah grew up accepting the belief that life should be guided by love and sincerity. Fate would later lead her to a man who shared those same values — Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Their relationship was never about wealth or social standing but about shared beliefs and mutual respect.

“I am a loving person and I found someone just like me. Tun and I share the same life values, so we never had problems in this regard. Our main focus is love. We both agree that family means everything and this will never change; other things come after that,” she said.

Together, they raised their children with the same values of humility and respect, teaching them that love and kindness outweigh wealth and status.

Toh Puan Fauziah has never sought fame or glamour. She prefers a quiet life filled with laughter and love, cherishing the warmth of her family.

During her 22 years as a flight attendant, she learned the importance of treating everyone equally, regardless of position or privilege — a belief she still upholds as the wife of the Head of State of Sarawak.

She believes that life is not about attaining titles or power but about remaining humble, no matter one’s status.

“I never felt the need to change just because of a title. I’m with Tun, who always remained humble. Our values align perfectly,” she said.

Since 2008, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, has held various important roles in the Malaysian government — from Deputy Speaker of Parliament to Minister of key portfolios. Yet, his humility remains unchanged.

“Despite holding numerous titles, Tun never changed. While many leaders surround themselves with private secretaries, aides and security, he took a different path. The luxury and protocols never changed him; he remained a devoted husband and father, deeply connected to his roots.

“He drives himself around, enjoys sitting in coffee stalls or roadside eateries with old friends, acting just like any regular person. There’s no arrogance, no gap of status,” Toh Puan Fauziah said, her voice full of pride and gratitude.

Since the very first day as husband and wife, Toh Puan Fauziah witnessed how her husband, embodies their shared belief that status, wealth and power are temporary possessions. What truly lasts are our character, behaviour and personal values — things that cannot be bought or sold for money.

Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar once told her, and he even wrote in his upcoming book, that titles and positions do not last forever; they are not ours to keep permanently.

“People might respect us today because of our roles, but could easily forget us tomorrow when we are no longer in power. What remains is our true self inside,” she said.

Toh Puan Fauziah does not consider herself esteemed or worthy of praise simply for being the wife of a prominent figure. Her husband’s humility keeps her grounded and reminds her that contentment lies not in titles but in authenticity. She remains content with who she is — unpretentious, sincere and anchored in her values. She prefers a simple life, staying close to her husband, children and beloved family.

In a world where true values are often overshadowed by the pursuit of luxury and prestige, Toh Puan Fauziah finds beauty in simplicity. She believes that love, sincerity and humility are life’s most enduring treasures — far greater than material wealth or lofty status.
