DESTINY wove an extraordinary tale when it brought Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi together with a remarkable man, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. A statesman of great distinction, he became her life partner and opened the doors to a role she had never imagined for herself.

From soaring through blue skies as a devoted flight attendant to gracing the halls of the Astana Negeri Sarawak as the consort of the Head of State of Sarawak, her journey is a mix of history and inspiration. Beneath her serene elegance lies a wellspring of strength, demonstrating that no dream is too distant and no obstacle is insurmountable when met with resilience and determination.

Now, as the wife of the Head of State of Sarawak, Toh Puan Fauziah embraces a role far beyond titles and prestige. This position, deeply rooted in sacrifice and sincerity.

Through her unwavering commitment to community initiatives, she is dedicating herself to the well-being of the people, always mindful that no one is left behind, regardless of their background.

Just as she once served with grace and dedication in the skies, Toh Puan Fauziah now devotes herself wholeheartedly to the people of Sarawak. Although her life has transformed, the values she cultivated over two decades of service remain her guiding light.

Patience, determination and a genuine heart for giving continue to shape her journey, inspiring those around her with quiet yet profound strength of her character. Life’s journey, filled with colours and experiences, often leads one to cross paths with many people.

On that day, as was her practice before every flight, Toh Puan Fauziah meticulously studied the backgrounds of first-class passengers, ensuring that the service provided would be of the highest standard.

In the calm of the business-class cabin, the aircraft was carrying a distinguished couple — Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, then Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, and his wife, Dato Seri Feona Sim Abdullah. Toh Puan Fauziah went about her duties as usual, walking gracefully towards their seats with the utmost professionalism.

Fate, in its unexpected ways, brought them together again once more two weeks later — this time on a Malaysia Airlines business-class flight from London to Kuala Lumpur.

LENDING A HAND TO THE ASSOCIATION

Time went on and each continued with their lives and daily routines as usual. However, out of respect and trust in the character of Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Toh Puan Fauziah found the courage to reach out to his then Political Secretary, Dato Sri Syed Hamzah Syed Paie, to seek assistance for the MAS Netball Club, which she led.

“Some time later, I also requested contributions in the form of netball equipment, as I was then the chairperson of the MAS Netball Club,” she said.

The same spirit of initiative and compassion carried through during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the nation came under the Movement Control Order (MCO), many people lost their sources of income, with some even cut off from food supplies.

At that time, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who was serving as Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, played an important role in ensuring that aid and support reached those in need across the country.

“The Ministry under Tun’s leadership provided significant assistance to Malaysians facing shortages of food and resources nationwide. At the same time, his staff received word from the village committee of Kampung Setia Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, that they required financial resources to provide help to affected residents.

“Syed Hamzah contacted me and asked me to identify those in need of assistance. I was tasked with purchasing essential goods and food supplies and distributing them to the affected residents.

“However, due to restrictions under the MCO, my communication with Syed Hamzah was limited and we could only coordinate via WhatsApp. Even so, I managed to carry out the responsibility entrusted to me.

“Assistance was also extended to several staff of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College in Kuala Lumpur, regardless of background — including cleaners and gardeners — without distinction of race,” she said.

Without hesitation, Toh Puan Fauziah carried out her duty to the best of her ability.

Each food package and essential item delivered represented more than just aid; it was a symbol of compassion and humanity at a time when the world was struck by a pandemic that claimed millions of lives.

Meanwhile, paperwork detailing the assistance, such as specific needs and requirements, was submitted to Syed Hamzah.

“This experience gave me a clear picture of Tun’s sincerity and noble-heartedness in helping those in need, regardless of who they were.

“Tun not only eased the way for official matters but was deeply sensitive to the hardships faced by ordinary people, even in issues that might seem small to others.

“In every action, Tun proved that leadership is not merely about power, but about empathy and the willingness to understand and help,” she said.

Fate, however, always moves in mysterious ways. Whatever destiny may bring, who are we as His servants to deny it? In every encounter lies a hidden thread of fate that may shape an uncertain future.

The day that etched a beautiful chapter in her life remains vivid in her memory. When the proposal came, her heart trembled deeply — as though time itself stood still, allowing her to wrestle with a rush of emotions and countless questions flooding her mind.

“Why me? I was really shocked?” she recalled — the question echoing in her heart, mingling wonder with profound emotion.

Everything unfolded so suddenly, almost too swiftly to grasp. Yet, beneath the initial surprise was a higher awareness — a realisation that what had transpired was no mere coincidence, but a chapter written by the hands of divine destiny.

“I truly never expected it. Everything happened so quickly. But within the whirlwind of emotions, I felt something deeper — an indescribable feeling, rich with meaning.

“At that moment, I felt deeply grateful and profoundly happy. I realised this was Allah’s will — a testament to His divine plan. Who are we to question His decree?.

“Indeed, Allah’s plan is the most perfect. Alhamdulillah, I embraced everything with an open heart and steadfast gratitude,” she said.

To Toh Puan Fauziah, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar was not merely a leader but a man who illuminated her world — a figure of strength and principle, yet one who carried a gentle heart and steadfast humility.

Toh Puan Fauziah also wishes to convey to the public: her marriage was never about status, titles, or material wealth. For her, the foundation of their union is genuine love and sincerity.

“I did not marry him because he held ministerial positions. When we married, he had already retired from politics and no longer held any official role. I married an ordinary man.

“He was upfront with me — he told me he wasn’t wealthy and didn’t possess great riches. But I assured him that, if necessary, I could always work to support us.

“Yet, he didn’t allow it. He didn’t want me to work and wouldn’t entertain the idea. The truth is, I never sought wealth. What I sought — and found — was love. Love from my husband means far more to me than material things.

“I, too, am, deeply grateful for the love his children have shown me,” she said.

ACCEPTANCE AND UNDERSTANDING

And so, the secret to their lasting harmony is revealed — mutual acceptance and unconditional love. A love that flows freely and generously, like a crystal-clear river, nourishing every corner of their hearts binding their family together.

Over the years, Toh Puan Fauziah has witnessed for herself how the seeds of love sown in the beginning have flourished into a tall, sheltering tree. It is a beautiful story that proves that beyond titles and status, what truly endures is love grounded in sincerity and the willingness to accept one another wholeheartedly.

Toh Puan Fauziah’s life once moved to unrelenting rhythm of time. Her 22 years of service as a flight attendant shaped her into a woman attuned to a world in constant motion — one filled with ever-changing places, faces and cultures.

Yet, amid all the hustle and high altitudes, there was little room for leisure. Rarely did she allow herself the simple pleasure of sitting in a coffee shop and chatting idly with friends. Life was a ceaseless current, pulling her forward.

But life, as it often does, had other plans. Her fate took a gentler, more grounded turn when she began her journey alongside her beloved husband. From the urban pulse of Kuala Lumpur, she followed him to Sarawak, the Land of the Hornbill — a place rich in culture, heritage and history, yet unfamiliar and distant to her at first.

“In the past, I never had time to sit and relax or chat for long at coffee shops. I rarely ate out. My world was filled with work. My life revolved around my duties.

“However, in Sarawak, everything changed. On weekends, whenever time allowed, Tun would invite me to join him at the local ‘kopitiam’, where he would catch up with friends over coffee and traditional delicacies.

“So, I had to learn to adapt to Tun’s circle of friends, including the local community. I needed to learn and not expect them to speak my language or adapt to my ways. I was the one who had to learn to speak in Sarawak Malay,” she recalled.

Toh Puan Fauziah soon realised that being a wife meant more than physical presence — it required her heart and spirit to immerse themselves fully in her husband’s world: his friends, his family and the vibrant community of Sarawak.

There, the quiet strength and perseverance of a resilient woman began to shine through. She refused to remain a stranger among those who had welcomed her with warmth. And so, with patience and dedication, she built her bridge — through language.

“Within a year, Alhamdulillah, I could speak Sarawak Malay. I feel I know more than some of my friends from the Peninsula,” she said, her lips curling into a proud yet modest smile.

Her progress was aided by an unexpected advantage. Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had authored a book about the Sarawak Malay language, a resource that became her companion and guide.

Learning the Sarawak Malay language came naturally to Toh Puan Fauziah, making the process smooth and enjoyable.

She did more than just learn to speak and understand it — she explored every word and phrase, including those that may have begun to fade from everyday use among the locals.

Through this, she not only mastered the language but also came to appreciate the spirit, gentleness and grace of Sarawakian, whose speech is known for its warmth and politeness.

Even so, she humbly admitted that her accent still does not quite sound like that of a native Sarawakian.

“Not quite there yet,” she said with a modest smile. Yet her ability to converse comfortably in the local dialect stands as proof of her genuine effort to adapt and belong.

When asked about the biggest adjustment in her life after moving from Kuala Lumpur to Sarawak, her response was sincere and touching.

“To be honest, there isn’t much difference. Back in Kuala Lumpur, my life also mostly revolved around home — with my mother, my son, my nephews and nieces. I took care of my family. That was my whole world,” she said gently.

EMBRACING A NEW ROLE

However, one thing cannot be denied — life inevitably changed after her husband assumed his new role. The space and freedom once enjoyed by the wife of the Head of State of Sarawak were no longer the same.

The responsibilities and expectations she now carries are heavier, her movements more restricted. It is no longer as simple as stepping out to buy turmeric, ginger, or lemongrass as she once did.

Some might assume that moving to a new state would mean a drastic change in food or culture. Yet for Toh Puan Fauziah, everything seemed to fall naturally into place — as if destiny had already paved the way for her heart to feel at home in the Land of the Hornbill.

“At Tun’s house, no one eats spicy food. It’s the same as my family in Kuala Lumpur,” she said with a small, unexpected laugh.

This surprising coincidence made her adjustment to Sarawak’s cuisine remarkably easy, though she noticed some differences in names and recipes.

“Here, people call it ‘cucur kememek’ or ‘cucur renyuk’. In the Peninsula, we call it ‘cekodok’. But it’s the same thing and my family in Kuala Lumpur loves that snack.” She continued, “Another difference is that Tun doesn’t eat much-fried food, except for fried bananas and his version of ‘cucur kememek’. That’s the only differences when it comes to food.”

“As for culture and lifestyle? There’s no real difference. Life here is just like in the Peninsula. There aren’t many changes,” she added.

And so, Toh Puan Fauziah became a woman whose life embodies the deep roots of a love that continues to blossom in the Land of the Hornbill.

By bridging language, culture and compassion, she has woven herself into the very fabric of Sarawak’s rich and graceful heartbeat.

BUILT UPON A FOUNDATION OF LOVE

Harmony is a blessing beyond measure in every home — a gift born of honesty, sincerity and the steadfast strength of boundless love. These are the principles Toh Puan Fauziah holds close to her heart as she navigates family life alongside her husband.

From the beginning of her marriage, Toh Puan Fauziah knew she was joining an already established family. The children of Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar are mature individuals with wisdom and intellect.

Yet, with gratitude to the Almighty, what could have been a difficult journey unfolded gracefully, guided by divine will.

“I feel grateful, Alhamdulillah, Tun’s children accepted me with an open heart. Even though I am not their biological mother, they have welcomed me with kindness. They embraced me as part of the family,” she expressed with deep appreciation.

Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s three daughters — Sharifah Fariah, Sharifah Nong-Jasima, and Sharifah Nuril Barieyah — are all accomplished women, enriched by education, guided by values, and shaped by love and life’s lessons. These three daughters became a bridge, warmly connecting a stepmother’s heart with respect and affection.

“These well-mannered children have accepted me as their father’s wife and I reciprocate their love wholeheartedly. I am raising my son, Muhammad Fida’yi Tasnim, with the belief that we are one family — united and inseparable.

“There are no divisions, no distinctions. Furthermore, Tun treats all his children equally, accepting Tasnim as his son. It’s a reciprocal relationship — I accept them, they accept me and that binds us together: pure, unconditional love,” she expressed, her eyes glimmering with emotion.

To her, love is the delicate yet resilient thread that weaves individual hearts into a strong and unbreakable family bond.

With gentle reflection, Toh Puan Fauziah spoke of her husband’s character, emphasising his commitment to family consultation.

Despite his prominent role in politics and government, he has always prioritised his family. Every decision, even simple ones like choosing a restaurant or what to order, is a collaborative discussion with his children.

“Tun is rather unique; even when deciding on dinner, he would call his children to discuss it. That’s his way — practising democracy within the household, making every decision together,” she said.

This prevailing harmony was not built overnight. It was nurtured from the very beginning. Before remarrying, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar spoke with his children, explaining his intention to make Toh Puan Fauziah his life partner.

“He didn’t make the decision alone. He gathered his children, explained everything and engaged in thorough discussions beforehand.

The children responded, ‘Whoever abah chooses is our choice too.’

“There were no issues, only full acceptance from the start, even before he became the Head of State of Sarawak,” she revealed.

Their sincerity and respect for their father reflected respect for their father and that the marriage was welcomed without reservation or doubt, leaving only prayers and hopes that the family will continue to have love and grace.

Understanding a man like Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar is akin to sailing across a vast ocean — profound and filled with depth. Anyone who meets him would instantly recognise a leader of firm conviction and unwavering principles. His upright posture, purposeful stride and serious demeanour often give an impression of someone who might seem challenging to approach.

However, only those who truly know him — especially his wife — understand that beneath his firmness lies a heart filled with gentleness and affection. Life with him is a vibrant journey, intricately woven with laughter, wisdom and cherished moments that often leave Toh Puan Fauziah smiling at his charmingly overprotective nature.

“Tun is a very loving husband. But at the same time, he can be quite jealous, or rather, extremely protective,” said Toh Puan Fauziah with a fond smile.

One memory that remains especially dear to her is a journey she made to Kuala Lumpur to pay her respects to a late friend. Unable to accompany her, her husband stayed connected through phone calls. But his calls weren’t just about her travels — they were filled with thoughtful questions that never failed to bring a smile to her face.

“He would ask, ‘Who is sitting next to you? A man or a woman?’,” she recalled, laughing softly.

“From his voice, I could sense a hint of jealousy, but it was clear that he is very attentive and truly cares about me.”

His jealousy was never a sign of distrust but rather a profound expression of love. Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar paid attention to every small detail of his wife’s life, always ensuring Toh Puan Fauziah’s safety and well-being at all times.

His care and attentiveness often spoke louder than words. Every time they stayed in a hotel for official engagements, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had an unchanging habit — he would always choose to sleep on the side of the bed closest to the door.

“Whenever we stayed in a hotel for official events, Tun would always insist on sleeping on the side of the bed nearest to the door.

“He said a man should sleep near the door for safety reasons. Small things like this show how much he pays attention to every detail, no matter how minor.

“At times, his actions, or how he pays attention, make me pause and wonder — why? Yet, every single one of them undeniably reflects the depth of his love and genuine concern for me.

“Tun is full of unexpected little surprises, and I truly appreciate every bit of attention he gives me,” she said, cherishing the days they have spent together, which are filled with surprises and profound meaning.

These gestures may seem small, the kind many would overlook, but to Toh Puan Fauziah, they are unmistakable proofs of love. They are expressions of care, concern and responsibility, the unwavering desire to ensure that the person he loves most is always safe.

Another gesture that deeply touched Toh Puan Fauziah’s heart was Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s attentiveness when it came to food and other thoughtful habits — things no one else had ever done for her.

“Tun is very thoughtful. For instance, he knows exactly which part of a fish I like. The same goes for chicken — he understands my favourite cuts.

“He is so caring that he even replaces my toothbrush for me. In my entire life, no one has ever done that for me. But Tun is so considerate that even something minor does not escape his attention. Imagine the depth of his care and love, even in the simplest of matters,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude.

Reflecting on their life together, Toh Puan Fauziah expressed how blessed she is to have a husband who genuinely cares — a man who shows his love not through grand gestures but through the quiet, consistent acts of thoughtfulness and sincerity.

Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar is not a man easily angered. Yet, when something requires correction, he speaks with frankness. His advice is precise — delivered without raising his voice — yet firm enough to ensure his message is understood.

“And most importantly, it must not be repeated. That is how firm Tun is. However, beneath that firmness lies incredible generosity. He has never been one to be stingy with money.

“His generosity extends not only to his family but also to anyone in need. He willingly sets aside a portion of his salary to assist the less fortunate,” she shared.

One particular incident deeply moved Toh Puan Fauziah’s heart. A person once approached them, seeking financial help amounting to RM1,800 to support their child’s education.

As usual, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar handed his mobile phone to her, asking her to make an online transfer. However, when she accessed his bank account, she was taken aback — his savings had dwindled to just RM5,800.

“I asked Tun, my voice filled with concern, as I informed him of the remaining balance in his account.

“His face furrowed slightly and he asked me where all his money had gone,” she said.

Toh Puan Fauziah’s heart grew heavier as she reflected on the man before her, who had willingly sacrificed so much to help others, often at the expense of his own needs.

“Yet, despite that, Tun still gave. Even though the amount he could offer was less than what was requested, he still gave with genuine sincerity and a heart full of generosity,” she said with admiration.

Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s compassion left an indelible mark on Toh Puan Fauziah’s heart. In the morning, before going to the market, he would carefully gather RM10, RM20 and RM50 notes intended for those he encountered — fishmongers, porters, or anyone who crossed his path.

His children, too, have followed in his footsteps. The noble values instilled by Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar were not solely about giving, but about embracing the belief that within our sustenance lies a portion meant for others.

“Every time Tun has breakfast at one of his favourite eateries, Old Rex in Satok, he always sets aside some money for a street cleaner he frequently meets. The man earns just RM30 a day and every time they cross paths, Tun never fails to offer him some money.

“I see that he is friendly with everyone, no matter where he is. His heart is always with the people, regardless of who they are,” Toh Puan Fauziah shared. The generosity of this distinguished leader is not limited to financial assistance. Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar was equally generous with his wisdom. Conversations with him were never trivial; every word he spoke carried weight — advice, experience and insight.

Many perceive Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar as a stern and imposing figure, perhaps due to his strong physique and serious demeanour. However, those who know him well understand that under this exterior lies a compassionate heart.

Toh Puan Fauziah recalled an incident that revealed Tun’s emotional side. It was during the screening of a short film in conjunction with the Official Birthday Celebration of the Head of State of Sarawak. In on scene, an actress portrayed his late mother.

“As that scene played on the screen, Tun, seated among the distinguished guests, suddenly lowered his head. His eyes welled up with tears. He couldn’t contain his emotions and quietly wept.

“That’s a side of him that few people see. While he may seem tough on the surface, he’s deeply sensitive. Even something as small as that can move him deeply,” she said.

It is nearly inconceivable that a man as formidable as Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar could be so easily moved. Yet that is who he truly is — a man whose heart overflows with love and whose memories of those who have shaped his life remain deeply etched within him.

Behind the wisdom of a statesman who has contributed immensely to Sarawak and Malaysia lies a heart imbued with love. Beneath the firmness of a leader resides the gentleness of a husband and father who places his family above all else. This is Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Despite the immense responsibilities resting on his shoulders, one thing has remained unwavering — his family is his utmost priority. No birthday goes unnoticed and no wedding anniversary is forgotten. Every significant date is carefully remembered, a reflection of his enduring love and devotion to those dearest to him.

This is the quality Toh Puan Fauziah admires most about him. Even with the demands of leading a state and serving the nation, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has never wavered in his role within the family. Whenever possible, he makes time for what matters most — his wife and children.

“For Tun, true happiness is found in moments spent with his children, sitting down for lunch or dinner with his beloved family. Those are the most meaningful moments of his life.

“To him, in a life filled with meetings, decisions and the affairs of the state and nation, nothing compares to the joy of hearing the laughter and seeing the smiles of his loved ones,” Toh Puan Fauziah shared.

In a world that often demands great sacrifices for success, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has demonstrated that one does not have to choose between family and duty. Both can coexist harmoniously, provided there is sincerity and wisdom in balancing life’s priorities.

Beyond his public persona as a respected statesman, outside work and politics, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has his own quiet sanctuary. One of his greatest joys lies in gardening.

According to Toh Puan Fauziah, her husband finds deep fulfilment in watching plants grow — in nurturing fruits and vegetables, feeling the soil in his hands and connecting with the simplicity of nature.

“However, if there are two passions that truly define his soul, they are reading and writing. He doesn’t just enjoy reading — it is part of who he is.

“Morning, noon, or night, wherever he is, there is always a book by his side. Even during breakfast, a book is his companion. And at bedtime, before his eyes close, he is often engrossed in the pages of knowledge.

“Through his reading, his writings take shape — thoughtful reflections that embody his insights. Tun doesn’t write just to document events; he writes to share his experiences and wisdom with the world,” she added.

To many, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar is a politician of sharp intellect and strategic mind. But to those who know him intimately, he is so much more. He is a man who believes that love resides in the simplest acts — a carefully selected piece of fish, a toothbrush replaced without being asked.

He may not promise the moon and stars, but he offers something infinitely more precious — the feeling of being cherished, cared for, and loved in the most genuine and heartfelt way.
