Toh Puan Fauziah exemplifies the qualities of a versatile woman who has excelled in various aspects of life. From education to aviation and sports to charity work, she has demonstrated that determination and persistence can propel anyone to the pinnacle of achievement.
Born on 21 November, 1980 in Kuala Lumpur, a bustling metropolitan city filled with challenges and opportunities, Toh Puan Fauziah’s early life was far from idyllic. Despite being born into a modest family, she did not allow her circumstances to hinder her ambitions. She consistently emphasised the importance of education and discipline, laying the foundation for her remarkable journey to success.
Even from a young age, she exhibited strong leadership qualities, an unyielding fighting spirit, and a steadfast “never-give-up” attitude. Toh Puan Fauziah began her academic journey at Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Hang Tuah (2), where she studied from 1987 to 1990, before moving on to Sekolah Kebangsaan Klang Gate from 1991 to 1992.
During her primary school years, she actively participated in various co-curricular activities, distinguishing herself as an outstanding student not only in academics but also in sports. Her athelic talent earned her the title of the school’s sportswoman, a testament to her dedication and talent.
In 1993, she continued her secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melawati before transferring to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati, where she studied from 1994 to 1997. It was there that she completed her secondary education, culminating in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) while excelling in athletics, netball, badminton and volleyball.
Toh Puan Fauziah was far from an ordinary student. From the beginning, she demonstrated exceptional ability in both academics and extracurricular activities. The numerous awards and recognitions she received throughout her schooling reflected her intelligence, determination and passion for learning.
Her achievements extended beyond academic excellence. She was active in sports, often representing her school in various competitions. These accomplishments did not come by chance but resulted from unwavering discipline and hard work — values she cultivated from a young age.
In recognition of her excellence, she was crowned Student Icon of 1995/1996 and named Best Athlete of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati. These accolades underscored her ability to balance academics and sports with remarkable success.
Following her secondary education, Toh Puan Fauziah pursued her studies at Stamford College Kuala Lumpur from 1998 to 1999. This experience further strengthened her academic foundation, equipping her for the professional world.
Her deep-seated passion for education led her to take on the role of a temporary teacher at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Pandan Jaya in 1998 and later at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati in 2000. As a teacher, Toh Puan Fauziah was deeply committed to her students, serving not only as an educator but also as a mentor who inspired many with her resilience and dedication.
However, her adventurous spirit and desire for new challenges eventually drew her to the world of aviation. In January 2000, she joined Malaysian Airlines System (MAS), the nation’s premier carrier, as a flight attendant. This role marked a pivotal turning point in her life.
For more than two decades, until October 2022, she served with dedication.
Her contributions extended beyond her duties as a cabin crew member, as she also took on leadership roles within the airline’s sports department. Her determination and professionalism earned her significant respect and recognition within the aviation industry.
The realm of aviation offered her invaluable experiences and opportunities to explore the beauty of the world. Toh Puan Fauziah journeyed across continents, immersed herself in diverse cultures and interacted with people from all walks of life.
This role sharpened her communication skills, honed her crisis management abilities, and shaped her into a mature, resilient individual.
Fate led her to a new chapter when she met Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, a distinguished statesman who later became the Governor of Sarawak. In 2022, they tide the knot, marking a significant milestone in her life.
The transition from a professional career to embracing the role of a prominent leader’s wife came with its share of challenges. However, Toh Puan Fauziah embraced this responsibility with grace, strength and wisdom.
As the wife of the Governor of Sarawak, her role extends far beyond accompanying her husband at official events. She plays a vital role in charitable and community initiatives, embodying compassion and dedication to society.
Her humility and approachable nature have made her a beloved figure within the community. Toh Puan Fauziah is not merely a symbol of elegance but also a source of inspiration for the younger generation, encouraging them to pursue their dreams despite obstacles and challenges.

Her life is not just a personal journey of success — is also a story filled with valuable lessons and inspiration for others.
Life, like a flight, is filled with turbulence and moments of breathtaking beauty, but what truly matters is how we land — with purpose and a steadfast commitment to leaving a meaningful, positive mark on the world.
From soaring through the skies to gracing the halls of Astana, her journey is more than a life story — it is a legacy that will inspire generations to come. That is Toh Puan Fauziah — a woman who has traversed the world, overcome challenges, and emerged as a role model of strength, grace and resilience.
Her journey exemplifies the transformative power of courage, dedication and sincerity in striving for excellence and contributing to the greater good.

BUILDING STRENGTH THROUGH ADVERSITY
Life’s journey is akin to a swift, flowing river — ever moving forward, never halting to look back, carrying within its current both the delights and tribulations of the path traversed.
Similarly, the inspiring story of Toh Puan Fauziah parallels this analogy, for she is a woman forged by resilience, nurtured through sacrifice and illuminated by the genuine essence of life.
Growing up in the housing area on Jalan Kenanga, Kuala Lumpur, a bustling residential area filled with towering blocks and a dense population, Toh Puan Fauziah shared her humble abode with her four siblings.
Their pillar of strength was their beloved mother, Mahni Haji Aman, a formidable woman who faced life’s challenges with resolute courage.
Toh Puan Fauziah remembers her mother, Mahni Haji Aman, as a loving figure and a resilient warrior.
From a young age, she witnessed Mahni’s unwavering determination as she faced challenges headon, single-handedly providing for their family with tireless effort and without complaint. Meanwhile, her father was occupied with work commitments. Thus, during their earlier years, it was their mother who became the pillar of strength, playing a crucial role in nurturing them with care, discipline and love.
“I grew up under the care of my mother, a woman of remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. When we were young, she was our provider,” Toh Puan Fauziah recalled.
Her mother’s words of wisdom often echoed in her mind, reminding her that true dignity comes from hard work and perseverance.
“My mother always emphasised the importance of earning a living with dignity. She instilled in us the value of hard work and never giving up,” she shared.
From a young age, Toh Puan Fauziah was well-acquainted with life’s challenges. Before school each morning, she would accompany her mother to the market to purchase ingredients for their steamed ‘nasi lemak’ business, which offered a variety of side dishes.
The dishes her mother meticulously prepared were not just meals for sale; they were also the foundation of the family’s livelihood.
Anchovies sambal, squid sambal, prawn sambal, fried egg, boiled egg, stir-fried water spinach with shrimp paste, beef rendang, chicken rendang, cockle sambal and lung sambal — all were her mother’s cherished recipes that sustained their family in the heart of the bustling metropolitan city.
“At the age of seven, I was already entrusted with procuring ingredients from the market for our steamed ‘nasi lemak’ business. We operated six days a week, closing only on Mondays.
“After returning from the market, I would then go to school at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Jalan Hang Tuah (2). In the afternoons, I would assist my mother in selling ‘nasi lemak’ at Jalan Gurney. For every contribution, I received a wage of RM5. This routine defined my early years,” she recounted.
Despite the scorching heat and fatigue, she persevered, diligently saving her earnings in Bank Simpanan Nasional. In those days, savings accounts were documented in physical bank books and with each entry showing an increased balance, a sense of accomplishment filled her heart. She understood the value of hard work and the challenges of earning a living.
Toh Puan Fauziah wasn’t the oldest, but as the second child and first daughter, she bore great responsibility. By the age of ten, she was already skilled at cooking for her younger siblings.
She took this responsibility seriously because her mother had to work to earn a living. If not her, then who else would take care of the family?
“As the oldest sister, I was the one who had to prepare everything for my siblings when my mother was at work early in the morning. I started cooking for them when I was just 10 years old.
“I was ready to take on that duty because I felt I was the oldest girl in the house at the time,” she said.
Toh Puan Fauziah’s childhood was far from a fairy tale. She rarely had time to relax like other children. But amid the business and struggles, she found joy in the world of sports.
“My childhood in primary school wasn’t as rosy as it might seem. But I loved sports and was my school’s sportswoman in 1992,” she said.
At twelve years old, Toh Puan Fauziah stood tall as the sportswoman of Sekolah Kebangsaan Klang Gate. On the track and court, she found freedom — as if her burdens disappeared. Every step, every drop of sweat, showed she could succeed despite life’s hardships.
The sky over Kampung Setia Jaya, Taman Melati, Kuala Lumpur, often bore silent witness to the small, determined steps of a teenager navigating life’s challenges. Though she was only in her early teens, the weight of her burdens seemed too heavy for her slender frame, as if the trials of adulthood had been thrust upon her too soon.
In contrast to most teenagers, who spent their days enjoying carefree moments, every step for Toh Puan Fauziah was weighed down by purpose. While her peers played in parks or became absorbed in TV dramas, her life was a constant battle — an unwavering quest to overcome one challenge after another in search of a brighter, more promising future.
When she entered secondary school, her world narrowed to two priorities: studies and work. Beginning her education at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melawati, her eventual transfer to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati marked only a change in environment, not her struggles.
Her responsibilities showed no sign of easing. She was more than just a student; she also juggled a part-time job at Club Century Paradise, a family club in Melawati. Her quiet determination, however, often went unseen by those around her.
“Since the age of 14, I had already started working part-time. I was hired because of my tall physique, even though I wasn’t of legal working age yet,” she shared.
It wasn’t out of obligation or coercion but a conscious choice to become independent and secure a better future for herself.
At the restaurant, she wore many hats. Toh Puan Fauziah never picked and chose tasks — she embraced every responsibility with unwavering dedication.
She tackled every job and request to the best of her ability, without complaint or hesitation. In her world back then, the concept of rest was almost nonexistent.
“I worked at a restaurant, helped out during events or functions and have also been an operator, receptionist and childcare assistant,” she said.
Afternoons found her in the library, diligently completing homework. Evenings were reserved for athletics training, where she poured her energy into representing her school on the field. Toh Puan Fauziah was no ordinary student — she represented her school and district in various athletics events, excelling in sprinting and high jump. Her determination even earned her a place in state-level competitions.
Among her achievements, she represented the Federal Territory Schools Sports Council (MSSWP) Keramat Zone in the girls’ under-16 high jump event in 1996, where she secured first place. That same year, she clinched second place in the high jump event at the MSSWP Athletics Championship.
But behind her triumphs on the field lay an even more inspiring story. At dusk, she would quicken her steps, carrying her dreams and hopes.
After training, she would embark on a 45-minute, nearly four-kilometre walk to her workplace. For her, the distance never felt too far, because every step was closer to a better future.
“Working until late at night became routine. If training ended early, I would start work earlier. If it ran late, I’d begin my shift around 7 in the evening.
“So, I never really had a typical teenage life. Whatever time I had, I used wisely,” she said. Her days ended close to midnight when she would return home after completing her shift. Earning RM4 per hour, her weekly pay of RM200 to RM250 was a significant sum for a teenager.
“However, the money I earned wasn’t for fun or leisure. Every cent went toward buying reference books, additional reading materials, stationery and most importantly, paying for my SPM exam fees.
“Back then, there was a fee for every subject and I didn’t want to burden my family,” she said, her voice tinged with pride for having supported herself through such a demanding time.
With her life revolving around responsibilities, one aspect of adolescence that never appealed to her was television. For Toh Puan Fauziah, watching TV was not a necessity. She devoted her time to studies, work and sports training.
Even today, when her children ask her about famous actors, she can only smile. The entertainment world had always felt distant to her, as she had chosen a different, more challenging path.
“I never watched TV because I never saw it as necessary. That’s why, when my children — Sharifah Fariah, Sharifah Nong-Jasima, and Sharifah Nuril Barieyah — ask me, ‘Bonda, do you know this actor?’ I always answer, ‘Bonda doesn’t know that actor or any others.’ I don’t know them,” she said with a soft laugh.
For Toh Puan Fauziah, reality itself was a performance — one that required her to give her all. She was dedicated to higher ideals: struggle, sacrifice and pursuit of dreams. Every step she took was a testament to her unyielding spirit. She proved that for those who strive with sincerity and determination, nothing is truly impossible.
From a young girl walking through the night to earn a living, she emerged as a symbol of resilience and perseverance. Her story is not just a tale of hardship — it is an enduring inspiration, a reminder that courage, hard work and sincerity can shape a brighter and better future.
Reflecting on her formative years at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, it becomes clear that leadership and resilience were integral to Toh Puan Fauziah’s journey.

As treasurer and zone leader of the prefect board, she was entrusted with the critical responsibility of upholding school discipline and order — a challenging task she fulfilled with unwavering dedication and efficiency.
Her excellence extended to the sports arena, where she shone as an extraordinary athlete with an indomitable spirit. She held leadership positions, including vicechairperson of the athletics and netball teams, as well as the Laksamana sports house.
Additionally, she served as secretary of the badminton team and the Recreation and Fitness Club, further exemplifying her organisational prowess and commitment to teamwork. Beyond sports, Toh Puan Fauziah’s leadership capabilities were showcased through her election as chairperson of the Business Club — a role that underscored her remarkable ability to lead, organise and inspire others.
Such accomplishments are a testament to her charismatic personality. The trust placed in her by teachers and peers also reflected her capacity as a true leader — disciplined, strategic and visionary in her approach to effecting meaningful change.
Academically, Mathematics was her passion, yet her brilliance extended far beyond.
In Form 4, she garnered the Best Student Award for core science subjects, demonstrating her boundless intellect and aptitude for learning.
Toh Puan Fauziah’s impact was not confined to the classroom. Her name is etched in the annals of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melati’s history as the recipient of the sportswoman of the year title for three consecutive years — 1994, 1995 and 1996.
In 1997, her final year, she achieved even greater heights, earning both the sportswoman title and the prestigious School Model Student Award.
These accolades were the culmination of relentless hard work, discipline and unwavering determination.
Her character assessment further highlights her exceptional personal attributes.
With an “A” rating in social interaction, selfconfidence and teamwork, she demonstrated an impressive ability to navigate diverse situations with grace and adaptability.
In terms of effort and determination, she earned a “B” rating, a reflection of her resilience and steadfast commitment to self-improvement, even when faced with challenges.
